Dengue Fever: An Overview and Its Impact

Dengue: A Leading Cause of Febrile Illness

Web dengue is a common cause of febrile illness in areas with risk. It is one of the most important mosquito-borne diseases in the world and a major public health concern in tropical and subtropical regions.

Africa: Among the Most Affected Regions

Africa is among the top four regions most affected by arboviral diseases, including dengue fever. The continent has experienced numerous outbreaks in recent years, with a significant number of cases and deaths.

Global Burden of Dengue

As of 30 April 2024, over 76 million dengue cases have been reported worldwide, according to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) Global Burden of Disease. The disease is estimated to cause approximately 40,000 deaths annually.

Symptoms and Treatment

Dengue fever is typically characterized by a sudden onset of fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, and nausea or vomiting. Severe cases can lead to complications such as dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome, which can be life-threatening.

There is no specific treatment for dengue fever, but supportive care can help manage symptoms and prevent complications. Treatment typically involves rest, hydration, pain medication, and monitoring for signs of severe disease.

Prevention and Control

Preventive measures against dengue fever include reducing mosquito populations by eliminating breeding sites, using mosquito repellents, and wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors. Vaccination is also available in some areas to help protect against the disease.
